Historical Spots in Dulag, Leyte 2nd Entry
THE RUINS
Brgy. Sungi Dulag, Leyte
An original Spanish structure built in 1595 and considered as the first exclusive Jesuit School in the province of Leyte. Opened as a religious school by a Jesuit priest named Fr. Alonzo de Humanes and subsidized by the Government of Spain pursuant to a royal decree, the school was descrived then as the only one of its kind in the country and far ahead of its time.
Destroyed by World War II in October 1944 when the American liberation forces led by General Douglas McArthur, landed in Dulag and used by the American forces as its 60th field hospital. Currently, it is reserved as historical site and heritage for generations to come.
CAPTAIN ISAO YAMAZOE SHRINE
Brgy. Del Pilar Dulag, Leyte
One such local hero is a Japanese army leader, Captain Isao Yamazoe. Capt. Yamasoy, who was then the Dulag Garrison Commander of the Japanese Forces sometime between 1941-1943, ensured that the Dulagnons’ quotidian lives remained as normal as possible. He valued Dulagnons’ way of life and embraced our own culture. Capt. Yamasoy would join the Dulagnons in serenading ladies, playing sports, attending religious rites and cultural traditions. The person whom we initially thought was a foe became a friend.
LIBERATION MARKER
Brgy. Sungi Dulag, Leyte
This is a battlefield at Dulag, Leyte where many Filipino, Japanese and American soldiers were killed in a tragic course of World War II. With the aid and understanding of Mayor Faustino A. Serrano, we set up this tombstone to soothe the souls of our friends who sacrifice their lives for their country. This remarks the everlasting World Peace and wish such regretful wilkings would never happen again.
